Should I Paint A New Gas Tank
Is it OK to paint a Galvanized Gas Tank , 57 3100 #660658 Thu Jul 08 2010 07:14 AM |
I have decided to pull the 53 year old gas tank in my 57 3100 and replace it with a new i. The new ane is galzanized. My quondam tank was painted with the interior color. My question is, should I get out the tank merely galvanized or should it be painted? If it is common to paint them then what preparation needs to me made to a galvanized gas tank? Any sanding/scuffing to the new tank or just Pre-Paint, primer and top coat or what? Any special prep or paint? Thanks. |

There is zip to exist gained past painting galvanized steel. Over time it will plow gray but the whole purpose of galvanization is to prevent corrosion. If you insist on painting it for artful reasons, wash it down with vinegar start. |

What Woody said. If you just paint information technology without the prep. he mentions, it will peel/flake rather quicly. Use a adept degreaser similar purple power and clean it upward and permit it go in my book is the best route. |

Cheers. I was thinking of keeping it galvanized just then was wondering it it would eventually get rusty in spots. I guess I tin can leave information technology galvanized and clean it occassionally and if information technology gets bad looking pigment it later. It is behind the seat so you lot practice not run into it that often. |

I painted my brand new 1 gloss black, I couldn't stand the look of galvanized, ii years later shes a lilliputian dingy merely no bug. I sanded it down, washed it twice, primed information technology, and painted information technology with single stage gloss black. |

You should etch galvanised metal, there are several products your local body shop supplier tin can show it, if you don't want to compose it I would wipe it downwards with booze to degrease it, and so wash it with vinegar (poor man's etching chemical compound)and wet sand it with some 220 dust wetordry, and then degrease and vinegar information technology once more, epoxy prime it and paint information technology. 1999 GMC Yukon |
